So school started a few weeks ago and architecture students are back in the studio environment – Aaahhhhh (breathing deeply) the familiar smell of despair, B.O. and basswood. There are a few things that I thought I would share with all you new studio rats. These are things you will probably have to figure out for yourself but I wish someone had told me some of these things when I was still spending 35 bazillion hours a week up at studio. There are many different experiences people might value from their time spent with other future architects but I would like to expose some commonly held urban legends associated with architecture and design studios.

1. All-nighters are not a requirement

Architecture students are terrible at managing their time. While part of the design process is the vetting that goes on between students, rarely do architecture students show up, put their heads down, and get to work in a methodical productive manner. There is a lot of competition and gamesmanship that goes on but if you manage your time in the studio like it was your job, all-nighters simply wouldn’t happen. I see all the time that when older people go back for an architecture degree or a masters – people who have been out in the work place or have other “grown-up” responsibilities, they never pull all-nighters. They don’t have to because when they are at the studio for 8 hours, they get 8 hours of work done. It’s the guy sleeping in the lounge during structures class whose desk is littered Starbucks cups that pulls all-nighters. This person will also brag about pulling an all-nighter – as a “grown-up”, this makes me chuckle.

2. Last minute changes do more harm than good

It’s always hard to stop designing, especially in school, but at some point the goal is to present the concepts, the drawings, and models to support your ideas. If you were to think of this process as if you were presenting to a client and work backward from a deadline, you will have far less negative work. If you determine that it is going to take you 4 days to build your model out of basswood and 2 days to render the drawings, leave yourself the appropriate amount of time and stop creating original work. If you have all these great ideas and no method to effectively communicate them who cares? I don’t and the people who will be sitting in on your jury crits don’t either.

3. A bad presentation during your review will not sink your grade

If things are still the same, people get really worked up and more than a little stressed out when the time comes to pin their work up on the wall to get reviewed. The good news should be that your professor, the person who will actually be giving you your grade, knows all about your project and how much time and effort you’ve put in. As a result, you should be less concerned about the guest professors/ reviewers who don’t know anything about your work, have 10 minutes to “get it”, and then offer some meaningful insight. More times than not those professors have their own pet project or something that they are into and their comments are simply a narcissistic way to make your project about them. Your project could be a multi-disciplinary research housing station on the dark side of the moon and the “sustainable” professor will find some way to ask you about rainwater harvesting. (think about it – I’m not making a joke). Same thing happens to the person who can render really, really well. Their presentation will look amazing and the guest reviewers will go on and on about how great this project is and how feeble the previous one was, this person’s on a entirely different level, etc. etc. … but everyone in the class (including the professor) knows that this project doesn’t work, despite looking as great as it does. Everyone is influenced by snazzy graphics – but unless this is a rendering class, you professor will know who did what and where the value lies.

4. Your portfolio has a 3 year lifespan (max)

Yes, your portfolio is important and you will use it at various points during school and your early career to leverage it into something you want. Just realize that at some point in the early future, you will be embarrassed that you thought your work was so great when it clearly sucks. Your portfolio will find a home in some closet with other items of diminishing importance because you will discover that the purpose your portfolio serves isn’t what you thought it was. It isn’t to show off some awesome creative project you designed, it’s about illustrating your proficiency in the various skills of the trade and demonstrating that you know how to think and process information. Think about it – do you really want the only message your portfolio to send is how great you can render? Because you’ll be the “render guy” when you finally land a job.

5. Hard work is easy to see

You aren’t fooling anyone, there isn’t any coasting and if you think you can get away with it you will learn the truth in the most public and humiliating manner. That guy we mentioned earlier – the one who thinks you have to pull all-nighters even though he sleeps during class – he’s full throttle isn’t he? He lives, eats and breathes this stuff - clearly he is going to make a great architect. Right? I could make a drop-in appearance in any studio and pick out the people who work really hard versus the ones who work hard at looking like they are working hard … and your professor knows it too. Yes, there are still prof’s out there who like and support this sort of behavior because it shows “dedication” or at the very worst a high interest level. Ultimately, hard work is it’s own reward.

6. Take business and real estate classes with your electives

I never did this and to be frank, it never even occurred to me. I was already taking a million hours and I saw my electives as a chance to coast a little. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy them or get anything out of the process . I took an intro to Ceramics class as a 6th year senior – all the other students were freshman Fine Arts majors. I had a great time in this class and I am pretty sure I had a guaranteed A after 3 weeks. The professor and I would talk about design and trends and he appreciated that I was there because I wanted to be there, not because I had to. I also did about 50x more “projects” than anyone else because I didn’t screw around as much as the others. Looking back, it was one of my favorite classes but I really wished I had burned that elective with something that would have helped me with my job today.

7. Visit your professors during office hours

This should be lesson #1 but it wasn’t as cool a lead off as all-nighters. This isn’t particular to studio as much as it is any and every class you take. When you take the time to visit your professor and ask some questions, say hello, whatever, magical things typically happen. Most professors are required to keep office hours and depending on the class they teach, I found that nothing happens during this time. As a result, I could ask about the lecture and not only would it get personalized for my benefit, but the professor was now engaged and invested in my success. I wasn’t a suck-up, I didn’t go by just to say wass’up but I did make it a point to make an appearance early on in the semester. I just wished I had learned this lesson before I took Quantum Physics as a freshman.

8. ”Sell” your professor

You should get used to thinking of your professor as your client and not your buddy. I know this might sound contrary to the preceding point but this is more about settings expectations. When you talk to your professor about your project, it’s important that you be able to clearly articulate your reasons for taking the design in the direction you have chosen. You need to think that it is your job to convince them that your assumptions are valid and that there is a good idea behind your logic. The professors job isn’t to do your project for you but rather help protect you from yourself and help guide you along the path you’ve chosen. I always like to hear professors engage in psychiatrist talk, i.e. “Why do you think this was an appropriate gesture” or “what do you think the result of that (blank) would be?” It’s their job to help guide you, not tell you what to do.

9. The value of jury reviews is not what you think it is

I touched on this a bit in item #3 but most architecture students think this is just about presenting their design and getting the wise and illuminating input from the guest reviewers – it’s not (see #3). This is really another important part of your education. The most important thing you can get out of these critiques is practicing the art of standing up in front of a room of people and emanating confidence and knowledge. You are the expert on your design so you should be able to convey the objectives, strategies, and directions your design takes better than anyone else. Talking under pressure without ahh’s and uhmm’s is not a gift – it’s a skill. If I had known that the ability to effectively communicate was a more prized skill than designing in an architectural office I would have put more effort into developing it at a younger age. No architect wants to hear that anything other than good design sells but it simply isn’t true. The person who can be put in front of the client, communicate and make a connection, will be more valued than a skilled designer. Those “star-kitects” you see in the magazines generally have the ability to be amazingly good at both.

10. Break the Rules (big picture)

The best projects tend to be about ideas and not about the literal execution – at least it is at design oriented programs. Who cares how that 10″ column is going to support the “lifestyle pod” on your habitat tree. If people are talking about your toilet layout and not your positive and negative space, your design probably isn’t very good and you are on the road to becoming a successful project manager. Kudos.

I feel like it is important to add that there are all kinds of value to staying up late and being with your studio mates. Going out for a coffee and street meat at 1:00 a.m. tends to build relationships and strengthen solidarity within the studio. I am not telling you to avoid that – you need to do that; it’s part of the education process. I am telling you to get your work done during regular hours (8am to midnight) and then you can screw off with your friends late at night listening to Miike Snow and remixes by Mark Ronson all you want. You can even be “that guy” who walks around offering unsolicited opinions that require a massive design reset if you want … but nobody likes that guy (that’s #11).

I am here to tell you that nobody gets their best work done past midnight - EVER. Look up the word ‘serendipity’ if you disagree with me. I am also aware that the work is typically more important than the grade so please don’t misconstrue what I am saying: this is about smarter not harder. Spend the time in the studio working instead of playing tape-ball. Please don’t act like there isn’t a lot of screwing around that goes on, we all know better. But don’t think that the old guy who is working over there in the corner while your rounding second base is a jerk because he wants to get home and see his kids. You are supposed to have fun in college, I am just telling you that there is an alternative manner on how to go about your business – one that will make a difference beyond this semester.

I’ve always wanted an entire wall in my house to be a blackboard. And with the availability of paint that transforms any surface into a blackboard, it’s never been easier. But here is a home that was designed completely around blackboard walls. Well, that’s not entirely true. Even with a name like Kokuban (blackboard) House, there’s a lot going, like the multiple boxes that dictate various functions, the fun tunnel-like doorway and the use of different types of facades – both indoors and out – that smudge the clear boundaries between inside and outside.

How to Get Hired at an Architecture Firm – Five Simple Steps

These five points were compiled by, BUILD LLC, a small architecture firm that recently expanded their office from 4 employees to 5. So what inspired the partners at BUILD to take on a junior architect after receiving numerous resumes? The hints lay within these five points, which may not be for everyone, but give an idea of what will make a candidate stand out among the rest.

BUILD offers a disclaimer: “This is not the politically correct version -this is the down in the trenches, get ‘er done version.”

1. THE BASICS ARE ONLY THE BASICS. As a candidate for employment, you absolutely have to have a clean, concise resume and an online portfolio of your work. These items don’t separate you from anyone else -they are the givens, the fundamentals. And while the quality of your resume and portfolio matter, they are not enough on their own (refer to items 2-5). Stop thinking that once you’ve got a cover letter, a resume and a portfolio that your phone should be ringing off the hook.

TIP: Clever candidates carry around a business card with their contact information and a link to their online resume & online portfolio. When they see a potential employer at an event or a coffee shop they can promote themselves easily and quickly. Smart.

2. USE YOUR PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS. We’re constantly amazed at how often the same approach is used by candidates. The traditional formula of sending a cover letter and a resume may work in a busy economy but, in case you haven’t noticed, this is the most challenging economy of our lifetimes; there are dozens of well qualified candidates for every available position in the architecture profession right now.

TIP: You’ve been trained in problem solving by that awesome school that you got your distinguished architecture degree from. You already know how to tackle the challenging economy out there; it’s simply a different problem to apply those same skills to. When you were given a design problem back in studio, did you look over at your neighbor and copy what they were doing? No, you used your problem solving skills to come up with your own unique solution. This is no different. Using the same formula as every other candidate out there right now is like building a spec home and expecting a bidding war of home buyers. You’re an architect in training, you’re creative –stop building spec homes and put those problem solving skills to use.

3. BE SOCIAL. We would all like to believe that if we work hard enough and long enough and produce beautiful work, that our talents will be sought out by the powers that be. This is not the way the world works (at least not for us). Architecture is just as much about communication, social skills, and networking as being a good designer.

TIP: Use everything you’ve got. Meet up with that old designer buddy of your fathers; they probably see 10 opportunities that you don’t. Get personally involved with a design tribe, be it an architecture blog, a regional journal like Arcade, or a non-profit like Habitat for Humanity. Be curious, be part of the discussion, matter. Who you are and how you areactually matter more to a potential employer than what is on your resume. Are you an excellent problem solver, do you have a silver tongue, did you take the time and effort to make it to the lecture? The things that don’t appear on a resume are what give you an edge. We keep track of the individuals that keep popping up on the radar -most architects do.

4. SHOW UP. Employers like to hire individuals that are “in the game,” individuals who employ actions instead of excuses. Showing up on time to an event with a go-get-‘em attitude is profoundly more memorable than a stack of resumes.

TIP: Keep tabs on the firms that you’re most serious about. They likely give lectures, attend architecture & community events and get coffee at the same place every day. Use social media to track the events they’re involved with and get them on your calendar. Here at BUILD we routinely post our upcoming events on the BUILDblog and twitter. Wasn’t it Woody Allen who said that “Showing up is eighty percent of life.” And he’s a schmuck – you can certainly show more enthusiasm than Woody friggin Allen.

5. FACE TIME. Getting yourself in front of a potential employer is imperative. A face and a personality to go along with that resume and portfolio do wonders for your chances of getting hired. Getting in front of a potential employer isn’t superfluous to the application process and it certainly doesn’t happen because of luck; it’s necessary and requires strategy.

TIP: Most potential employers don’t have the time or inclination to individually meet with everyone that sends in a resume. Be strategic and show up to key events (refer to #4) and introduce yourself to potential employers. We recently gave a lecture with Gordon Walker downtown, and out of all the young architects in Seattle slinging their resumes around, only one individual took the initiative to introduce himself after the lecture. Smart. He had a card with his contact info and links to his online resume and portfolio. Smart. He now works atBUILD LLC.

Rients Dijkstra is principal of Maxwan Architects and urbanists, senior architect and urban designer. He has studied architecture and urban design at the Delft University of Technology. There he graduated with honors in 1989. He worked with architects Frits van Dongen (de ArchitectenCie) and Rem Koolhaas (OMA). In his capacity as project architect and urbanist for the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, he has contributed to the Lille 'Euralille' Master Plan (1990-1991) and he was team leader and chief designer for the Amsterdam Y-Oevers (banks of the river Y) Master Plan (1992) and the Tram tunnel in Den Hague (1993). In '93 Rients Dijkstra was invited to design the Urban Master Plan for Leidsche Rijn, a new town of 30'000 houses. This unusual first assignment kick-started his own practice: Maxwan architects and urbanists. Rients Dijkstra has been a member of Ken Livingstone’s Design for London Advisory Group. He is supervising architect for Barking Riverside and a member of the Barking Riverside Design Advisory Panel and he is supervisor for both the Rotterdam and Leiden Central Station area master plans. Rients teaches and lectures on a regular basis.

On Tuesday, September 7, we met with CleanTech industry leaders, real estate professionals, and architects at the Institute for Human Centered Design to discuss the development of a CleanTech Incubator in the Innovation District.

Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino called upon the BRA’s GreenTech initiative to create a cleantech incubator, following a meeting with a dozen cleantech CEOs in June. The City of Boston Cleantech Incubator is dedicated to accelerating the development and commercialization of Cleantech technologies, fostering innovation and strengthening job creation capacity within the industry, while amplifying the profile and brand of Cleantech in Boston.

Jim Hunt, the Mayor’s Energy and Environmental Services Cabinet Chief who participated in the discussion noted that “the mission behind the incubator dovetails nicely with the city’s sustainability and economic development goals.”

Often considered a component of successful industry cluster development strategies, incubators provide space for start-ups to grow, thrive, prototype, and perfect product and service designs by offering low cost (in some cases free) space in combination with a mix of additional features including access to professional services, lab space, or funding. Harder to quantify, but often linked with incubators, are the opportunities and environment they provide for creative interaction and cross pollination between occupants and even across disciplines. Incubator sponsors (governmental, academic, private sector) are motivated by the potential for industry specific localized economic development, or “clustering” (incubator “graduates” become attached and find space nearby), branding, and, in some cases equity.

Galen Nelson, Greentech Business Manager at the BRA, who has been tasked with spearheading development of the incubator, added “the Boston cleantech incubator will be part of a growing network of similar incubators state wide and complement an array of policy and program initiatives at the City level that boost market conditions for cleantech company growth.”

Tuesday’s discussion focused on the competitive advantages incubators offer cleantech startup companies, incubator management, function and ancillary service options, and possible strategic partnerships and funding opportunities. The group also struggled with the potential breadth of a cleantech incubator acknowledging that the industry has several diverse sectors, anchored by clean energy, that draw on multiple disciplines and require an array of facilities, equipment, and space configurations.

坐在一壘的球員休息區正後方
突然全場燈光一暗
一群老頭帥氣的用 Train Kept a Rolling 登場
Steven Tyler 聲音實在是很厲害剛開始高音還沒唱出來之後似乎完全熱開了
這樣的聲音不知道還可以再喊幾年
可能是第一次在 Fenway park 的大型演唱會
離舞台遠的地方中間還隔了一段不能踐踏的內野草皮音場不是很好聲音胡在一起
吉他的 rythm 都聽不是很清楚高頻也都被 crash 吃掉了
尤其是 Joe Perry 的 Billie 那把吉他聲音不是很清楚
當下深深感受到賺錢還是很重要的有錢以後坐近一點的位置好
Joe Perry 實在老的很有型和大家講了很多話 spotlight 也很多
中間一段和 Guitar hero 飆 solo 很屌 solo 自在的跟喝水一樣
鼓手 Joey Kramer 的爆點是 solo 完以後把鼓棒丟到台下開始用雙手和頭 solo
經典的歌實在太多了很多想聽的 Jaded, Dude-... 都還沒聽到 Steven 就跟大家道晚安了
安可一開始大家猜不到他在哪
結果他在 Green monster 上換上 RedSox 球衣坐在鋼琴前和大家揮手開始自彈自唱起 Dream on
感覺是整場聽到感覺最棒的一首歌果然還是經典中的經典
不過實在是很擔心他會從 Green monster 上摔下來那可能就真的完蛋了...
隨後安可只有到第二首 Walk this way 就結束了
感覺還不過癮阿...
下次有機會還是要擠到前面的位置享受讓音響團團圍住的感覺

現場聽眾主要都是中年發福的 rocker 了
歲月不饒人阿高中時代的偶像很高興今天親眼目睹了

Eugène Viollet-le-Duc

Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc (1814 – 1879) was a French architect and theorist, famous for his "restorations" of medieval buildings. Carl Jacob Christoph Burckhardt (May 25, 1818, Basel, Switzerland – August 8, 1897, Basel) was a historian of art and culture, and an influential figure in the historiography of each field. He is known as one of the major progenitors of cultural history^[1], albeit in a form very different from how cultural history is conceived and studied in academia today.^{[citation needed]} Siegfried Giedion described Burckhardt's achievement in the following terms: "The great discoverer of the age of the Renaissance, he first showed how a period should be treated in its entirety, with regard not only for its painting, sculpture and architecture, but for the social institutions of its daily life as well."^[2] Burckhardt's best known work is The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy (1860).

dear all, here are some suggestions for each of you based on where you are and the reviews last week.

FOR ALL:
please send me your library manifestoes. if you realize that your manifesto needs some evidentiary support now is a good time to quickly set up your argument, especially if it has changed from where you have been. generally i think we lack this 2 statement intro across the studio. what is the status of the library as an institution, what are the opportunities for it once it is collaborating with mbta, contemporary nature of public space or of storing and retrieving information. and then how does your project tap into the potential you describe.

all of you need to give me some qualitative images of the interior of your project this weekend, these could be collages or renderings...but they need to bring out the atmosphere of your project. For some go bys on this - I am a big fan of Josep Luis Mateo's collages. He uses collage (a kind of combination of rhino massing with more material images and scalies) to design...makes them before his 3d model is all rendered and complete - and that is why these are useful for him. Bring in the materials, the quality of light and some real people...you want to filter them somehow, but most importantly it is much better if you find your library of scalies (photograph each other in the right pose from the right angle or find a photographer whose work you like...or a movie...and cut out come people) than to use some generic rhino or illustrator character. the important point here is that you need to make these images before your project is resolved...think of them as an image campaign, or a postcard from your library before it actually exists.

Also if you don't have this drawing - and many of you do not - you need to have a 3dimensional or a 2dimensional explanation of your programmatic organization.

I want to see all three of these by Monday.

I will go clockwise around the studio and i want you to see each others comments:

Andy - do not add sticks to the facade that touch the ground. I could have killed you when I saw all of those sticks totally dumbly attached and totally perpendicular to the ground too. The choice you make because you are running out of time makes me think that you are not understanding me. You really need to develop the narrative of the project - why do we need the landscape...I think that it is pretty cool...but in order to really develop it you need to be clear on what is and what is not the ambition of your project. I think the plan was getting better....you need to draw those sections again, and also please please look at some real section drawings. You need foundations...cannot just stop at the line of the site ground. In your sections you need to differentiate between the tectonic elements...your floors don't just continue to become your vertical partitions. I would try two different ways of making enclosures on the interior of your project: one could be those scripted sticks, but they have to be scripted to produce different situations and patterns, and they either have a different curve on the bottom and in the floor that they are connecting between or they are at an angle and connecting two same or offset curves (they are not straight), or the enclosures are more 3-dimensional objects...so something like a big egg or 3d elliptical object that sits in your landscape and maybe protrudes through the ceiling...this would be more like OMA's agadir project...that has a big circle serving a real enclosure function. Your roof cannot be just a dumb plate. You need to become clearer and FASTER about resolving everything, and do not fear complexity. If you build up the complexity of the project step by step it will be easy to pull of and resolve.

how is everyone?

i hope that you already received the global mail about our next week's schedule. i still want us all to meet on tuesday in a small pinup mode. it will be a working session, which does not mean that you are not printed and that you only begin to make progress on studio from 2pm onward. you all need to be printed and ready to talk, but you also need to be ready to do things as we go...that is, i will literally send you to your desk to make a model in 20 minutes and bring it back. or to test an aspect of drawing, print it and bring it back, so have materials, knifes, glue...around. you will need it.

you need to absolutely have printed and good drawings of your program studies. i do still want to see 2 schemes...they can be variations on a theme different enough to be meaningful, or two radically opposed directions.

you also need to have 4 massing model tests - 2 of those are to be related to the two schemes I mentioned above. be inventive and smart when it comes to finding the 'right' means to represent your massing...you can use corrugated cardboard, wood, pink foam, cast glycerin, plexi, just don't use all this at the same time.

so for tuesday - your drawings of program and whatever library descriptions (based on real examples or graphic standards) need to be at a super high level. your models need to be excellent (thoughtful and well made) but they don't have to be as developed as your drawings. Please do not take this to me that you can just glue a few things together 5 minutes before studio, everything in design takes time, thinking and tinkering...you have to put that time into it. and only if you do, will you also enjoy it...

don't make me have to beg you to be great! you have to want it! i hope that you have worked on studio every day since i saw you...smartly and steadily.

do not postpone working on studio until tomorrow! I WILL KNOW, YOU WILL KNOW...AND YOUR WORK WILL KNOW that you did it. Now that you are in the studio with other studios, look around...talk to other students about work/life habits.

you have to love what you are doing...and you have to care for it...and you have to keep a straight head about it...

I am ok with you taking one day of the weekend off for yourselves...but you have to get back to studio before Monday, or it will be too late.

DON'T PANIC (panic is counterproductive) - TRY TO RELAX without "relaxing" your intensity and without loosing your LOVE FOR ARCHITECTURE. Let these problems torture you until you have solved them, don't let the schedule torture you into stressing about it all and just trying to check studio off the list.

今天wilco很有誠意的唱了整整三個小時, 害我回到學校已經腿軟了
表演剛開始兩個keyboard sets雜在一起, 感覺有點大聲,
不過還是可以看Nels Guitar Hero般的在飆吉他, 一路飆到了Impossible Germany的solo, 好屌
Spiders唱到一半, 突然趁著吉他上演大爆炸, 一群黑衣人衝上來, 把另一組drum set架在舞台前方, 另外加上幾展破立燈, Spiders突然變成unplugged版, 超屌
接著連續幾首unplugged, balance都很讚, 兩把木吉他的都痛超好聽, 後來連double bass也出現了
好不容易等到的Jesus, Etc., Jeff要大家大聲唱, 不要輸給其他城市的歌迷
結果前兩次主歌+副歌完全是台下在合唱, 配上台上的bandsound, 其實真的很好聽, 賴打該拿出來了, 可惜我沒有
下半場吉他聲音都有推出來, 爽
Heavy Metal Drummer 前面的Intro接的很讚, 爽

唉, 唸了建築之後, 生活中突然很多東西都被犧牲掉了
建築師還是乖乖幫別人蓋房子, 音樂就交給Wilco作給我們聽吧！

難得studio有機會校外教學一大早從North Station坐車去看Louis Kahn的 Phillips Exeter Academy Library
難得同學一起出去玩, 感覺很好
果然生活中少了 Studio 一切都很美好

晚上又到Harvard Sq. 看了Omara Portuondo的表演 Buena Vista Social Club裡面的女主唱
想不到她已經是高齡八十歲了, 這樣賣靈魂的表演
一口氣也唱了兩個小時, 又留了一個小時幫大家簽名, 很偉大
自己很幸運地能夠看到她本人還要到了簽名跟合照,
她真的算是傳奇的人物

阿... 世界上真是充滿很多美好又偉大的事情

第二學期開始啦, 時間好快

從台灣回到Boston, 其實一切都很習慣,
習慣的溫度, 習慣了熬完夜瞇一下隔天繼續上課, 習慣這邊Chinese Food的味道, 習慣了禮拜天一早起床, 就走到電腦前面坐下來開始畫圖, 一路畫到晚上, 結果還是哀嚎
有時候走在Studio外的走廊, 會突然很懷念上學期, 甚至是上學期的座位, 在那間Studio的每個晚上
一開始狀況外, 什麼東西都搞不懂, 傻傻的, 剛開始被學校強暴的好慘, 連想家的機會都沒有

新學期開始了, 也許是習慣了, 步調感覺很快, 感覺像是不久之後學期又要結束了...
到頭來, 最懷念在學校的, 應該都會是最當初最懵懵懂懂的第一個學期吧

When I quit the band, over a year ago, we were on an indefinite hiatus. There was no drama or anger involved, and the other guys were very understanding. They are supportive of my doing whatever makes me happy and that goes both ways.

To put it simply, my musical interests have led me in a different direction. Upon rejoining, and throughout my time in the band, I was very excited about exploring the musical possibilities inherent in a rock band, and doing so with those people in particular. A couple of years ago, I began to feel that same excitement again, but this time it was about making a different kind of music, alone, and being my own engineer.

I really love the band and what we did. I understand and value that my work with them means a lot to many people, but I have to follow my interests. For me, art has never been something done out of a sense of duty. It is something I do because it is really fun, exciting, and interesting. Over the last 12 years, I have changed, as a person and artist, to such a degree that to do further work along the lines I did with the band would be to go against my own nature. There was no choice involved in this decision. I simply have to be what I am, and have to do what I must do.

今年父親節

還記得爸爸陪我去拿IELTS成績單的那個晚上，我從軍營出來，直接坐上老爸的車，一路到台北101旁的英國文化協會。一個人走上二樓至櫃檯，和我一樣不安的老爸在車上等我。雖然在準備拿成績的過程中，我們已經坦然地以最平靜的心去面對，並了解到不管成績如何，都將會得到美好的結果。不過，當成績揭曉時，我們兩個人都真的鬆了一口氣，一個月的努力和一路走來死馬當活馬醫的期待終究是沒有白費。

從一開始的鼓勵與安慰，向隊上長官溝通我的特殊狀況，為了搶報名資格而在上班時間幫我來回跑了幾趟英國文化協會，幫我尋找適合協助我準備考試的補習班，幫我送資料到軍營給我，不斷的詢問朋友關於國外申請學校的經驗，嘗試著想要連絡美國的教授，陪我一起等待學校回覆的每一封信，載平平凡凡到考場樓下接我吃飯回家，到最後載我把考試的成績單拿回家。這一個月讓我深深感受到父子倆一起合作的力量，也讓我感受到老爸在我出國的最後一個階段，還用力的推了我一把。就如老爸所說，比結果更重要的是這一段努力的過程，很多東西只有在當下，當事者才有辦法體會到的。除了英文外，這段時間我真的領悟到很多。

今年父親節，感觸特別深。
很感謝老爸對我的支持，很感謝家人給我的力量。
希望未來我都不會讓你們失望。

期待了五年
沒想到在最後半個月，心情是這樣的不捨

儘管一再的抱怨台灣的環境
這裡終究是我的故鄉
有我愛的人有太多我懷念的地方

當了兵之後，讓我更了解生活的簡單幸福
也更了解了與家人和朋友在一起的時光是如此可貴
短短退伍一個半月，我又要再次離開熟悉的生活

真的感謝很多人的幫忙與支持
如今我才有機會去實現自己的夢想
儘管之前花了幾年的時間去確定這是我的目標
至今我還是會懷疑自己的決定是否正確
不過，事到如今也不會回頭了，就盡力走下去吧

從其名找建築，從建築找其名

有時候旅行是為了尋找有名的建築，一睹經典作品的風采
並且在欣賞中體驗了當地的生活

有時候在旅行途中遇到了很舒服的空間
回頭才發現到，原來那是大師的作品
從環境之中找到了建築，像是建築很美好的座落在當地的生活中

因為自己見識淺薄
我到三年後的今天才知道這個當時感覺很舒服很美好很想走下去喝一杯咖啡的空間 TIME’S，原來是安藤忠雄的作品…

這給了我另一種欣賞建築與思考建築的角度

Letter to BK學長

很難想像，在都蘭迎接我的會先是Bob Marley的音樂。
而當我一離開都蘭，到了高雄，原本期待我會在南部的旅途中繼續去體會不同的空間思維，卻沒想到這些空間給予我的感受只是一片空白，我的思考仍停留在都蘭。雖然只是短短的二十四個小時，但是這次旅行所給予我的刺激，似乎將暫時持續下去好一陣子，而我也必須花好一段時間把在那裡學到的一切慢慢消化，再花很多時間慢慢驗證。真的很感謝學長把我拐了下去，如果沒有這次機會，我想也許我這一輩子都不會有機會體驗到這樣的生活哲學，除此之外，也真的很感謝都蘭的朋友和舅舅們能夠包容我這個台北俗。

一天的時間是很巧合的，他給我了戲劇性的衝擊，讓我在不同的空間中被極大的反差給震撼到了。一天的時間裡，我一時之間真的學到很多東西，其中也包含了對於未來前往美國唸書的期待與意識，這次旅行真的是實實在在的給予了我超乎想像多的"出國前的建議"。真的很感謝學長您的用心招待，希望自己未來不會讓您失望。

其實準備的心得回想起來真的不少，我想我就按照時間順序把心得依序分類吧。

我是交大土木系畢業的學生，其實在大學之前就有想過要唸建築，不過因為家庭和個人的因素，自己先選擇了土木作為主修。大學期間，因為有幾次不錯的出國經驗，自己就很希望畢業後能出國留學，所以算是花了不少的時間在做準備。以下是我的準備的過程，在此和大家分享。

基本設計
大學時期很榮幸的能參與基本設計的課程，這堂課確實幫助我很多。從最基本的繪圖訓練，到3D模型的製作，presentation的能力與技巧，作品集的製作等。這門課給了我很多對於建築教育基本的認知，讓我了解到除了自己天馬行空的空間想像外，建築有更多從未接觸過的挑戰及趣味。另外，兩位U Penn畢業的老師，eaGer及Ian也投入非常多的精力在學生上，營造出不可多得的學習環境，學生除了分享自己作品的心得以外，也互相提供關於學校方面、演講方面等的建築資訊。在這裡，我累積了不少自己對於空間的看法，也在迷惑中更堅定自己未來要出國唸建築的想法。申請時作品集的排版及其中的作品都是課堂上的作業與成果。

旅行
很幸運地，有家裡的贊助，大學時期我能有機會到世界各國去旅行。在台灣，建築像是課本裡面的教材，只有在平面媒體上才可以接觸，而一到國外，建築變成真正實用的東西。像是走在香港赤臘角機場裡，在經過出境大廳的途中，能在機場標示中體會到建築師所用的每一份心力，能夠體會到形體之外的空間內容。身在建築中，才能去想像參與工程的建築師，結構技師，水電技師和工人，是怎麼畫出這些線條，創造出這個空間。另外，背著背包，投宿各地的青年旅館，讓我能夠以最近的距離去觀察國外的文化，讓我可以體會國外的人是如何看待世界與人生。這些不僅讓我增廣見聞，也讓我更認識自己，理解到自己的特色。

演講及展覽
大學這幾年也把握機會參加了不少大師的演講，就像聽演唱會一樣，把偶像一個一個收集起來。另外，如同有些建築師喜歡與其他藝術領域的朋友對話，有時候能到北美館走走，或是上網看看多媒體和其他藝術領域的作品，都給了自己的大腦不少刺激。也因為自己本身有在玩音樂，很多音樂的想法是可以跟空間作溝通的，音樂讓我能以不同的角度去思考建築，而不會太過投入於單一的領域而無法自拔。我想，每個人所擁有不同的興趣和才能都可以像這樣去平衡自己的思考吧。

英文
安排了自己在延畢的一年中同時補TOEFL、GRE和準備申請要用的東西。英文成績對於申請者來說似乎是蠻重要的，佔了不少決定性的因素。此外，我也很想在出國前提升自己的英文能力，否則花了大錢卻聽不懂別人再說什麼，實在是有點浪費。在台灣，分享英文學習的網站很多，PTT的TOEFL_iBT版、IELTS版、GRE版，大陸的太傻、追夢網等。

作品集
自己花了大概一整個學期的時間在製作作品集的排版，其中包括了找廠商試印(測試紙的材質、封面封底的樣式、書的裝訂方法等)。另外，因為家裡沒有雷射印表機，也沒辦法印到A3大小的紙，自己也常常會帶著草稿檔案到Seven-Eleven的iBon去試印，隨時注意軟體中的版面與實際閱讀的版面有沒有不和諧的地方。也很幸運地，能與在基本設計課認識的劉舜平同學互相交流切磋，常常一起相約帶筆電到咖啡廳作作品集，一做就是到天亮。其實能夠有個互相鼓勵目標一致的夥伴，一起工作起來真的是件很快樂的事情。一直到學校放榜的現在，我也都還很懷念那一段一起拼作品集的漫漫長夜。在製作作品集的概念上，因為自己非本科系出身，沒有能力去做真正的建築設計，所以想要盡量表達自己的特色，運用了對所自己居住城市的看法、土木工程所學到的一些概念、以及音樂相關軟體的運用等，最後還加上一張自己作的簡單CD，想讓整本作品集比較有特色。

準備推薦信、SOP、申請相關文件和表格
因為沒有打算請代辦中心，想要自己處理，推薦信、SOP、申請相關文件和表格等這些東西，我都是利用當兵放假的時間來準備。有一段時間自己在高雄受訓，每個週末都要跑回台北，可以說相當辛苦，也砸了不少錢。要注意的是，每間學校的要求都不盡相同，包括SOP的字數，網路呈推薦信或是僅接受紙筆推薦信，網路申請表格或是紙筆申請表格，有無另外的獎學金申請表格或是財力證明申請表格，以及每間學校皆不盡相同的表格及作品集繳交期限。一次處理九間學校，自己的頭腦一定要保持很清醒。同時也感謝幫我寫推薦信的老師，陪我一起在混亂中把學校一間一間解決。

選擇學校
考量自己想要在大城市唸書，和自己想要在英語系的國家唸書，最後我一共申請了九間學校，都是美國的Master of Architecture Program，分別是Harvard 、MIT、Columbia、Pratt Institute、Parsons、U.Penn.、IIL、UCLA、SCI-ARC。最後我拿到了IIT的半額獎學金Admission，SCI-ARC的Admission，和MIT的半額獎學金Admission。Pratt因為申請文件沒有完整而申請資格被defer一年。其他的學校則被拒絕。最後我選擇了MIT，除了學校知名度與半額獎學金外，也因為我是紅襪的球迷。

最後，我也很謝謝準建的各位前輩和站長eaGer，準建陪伴了我準備出國的這幾年，我在這裡得到相當多的資訊，也因此有機會參加幾場難得的演講。身為非本科系的學生，總是認為自己對建築的知識有限而沒有常常在準建發言，把自己定位成了準準建築人。很幸運地，今年申請上了國外的學校，我希望能把自己的經驗分享給同樣對出國唸書有興趣的同學，回饋給準建，以後在美國有有趣的求學經驗也會在此和大家分享。謝謝。
